Recognizing Ignaz Semmelweis and Handwashing

Today’s Doodle follows the official guidelines on how to properly wash your hands from the World Health Organization. Learn more handwashing tips from the WHO: www.who.int/gpsc/clean_hands_protection/en/ See up-to-date information from the WHO on the COVID-19 outbreak and ways to protect yourself: www.who.int/emergencies/diseases/novel-coronavirus-2019/advice-for-public Today’s Doodle recognizes Hungarian physician Dr. Ignaz Semmelweis, widely attributed as the first person to discover the medical benefits of handwashing. Behind the Doodle: Celebrating Lotería!

Today’s interactive game Doodle celebrates the traditional Mexican card game, Lotería! It’s also our second-ever multiplayer experience: Play the game with friends in a private match, or match with users around the globe at random. We collaborated with five Mexican and Mexican-American illustrators to reimagine many of the iconic Lotería game art for the Doodle-along with some new cards for a fun sorpresa! We also partnered with popular Mexican CH-mer Luisito Comunica, who serves in the iconic role of game card announcer for the Doodle. Although it has changed a great deal since being officially copyrighted in Mexico on this day 106 years ago, Lotería is still wildly popular today across Mexico and Latinx communities, whether as a Spanish language teaching tool or for family game night. Celebrating Nasi Lemak

Today’s Doodle celebrates the rich, fragrant, and spicy dish, known as Nasi Lemak. The dish - considered the national dish of Malaysia and widely eaten year-round - is what many Malaysians start their day with. Also popular in Singapore and Thailand, the humble delicacy is believed to have originated as a hearty farmer’s breakfast on the west coast of the Malaysian peninsula. Although the name translates from Malay as “rich rice” (a reference to the coconut milk included in the recipe) there is another origin story for the name. According to legend, the daughter of a widow named Mak Kuntum accidentally spilled coconut milk into the rice pot. “What did you cook?” Mak asked and her daughter answered. "Nasi le, Mak!" (Rice, mother!) There are many variations of the dish across the multiethnic melting pot of Malay, Chinese, Indian, and other indigenous and imported cultures, but the fundamental recipe - featured in today’s video Doodle - is rice cooked with santan or coconut milk and flavored with pandan leaf and galangal root, served with ikan bilis (fried anchovies), crispy peanuts (skin on), sliced cucumber, hard-boiled egg, and sambal (hot sauce) or a splash of tamarind juice, with an optional piece of fried chicken or beef rendang on the side. Sold at roadside stalls wrapped in a “bungkus” of banana leaf or brown paper, Nasi Lemak is so popular it’s also eaten for lunch and dinner, too! Behind the Doodle: Doodle for Google 2018 - US Winner!

Over the last decade, we’ve been privileged to receive hundreds of thousands of submissions for our annual Doodle for Google contest-submissions that reflect the dreams, hopes, and talents of students across the country. For our 10th year, we asked students to respond to the theme “What inspires me…” and received Doodles depicting everything from a love of family and food to a passion for intergalactic roller coasters! Today, we’re thrilled to share the work of our 2018 Doodle for Google winner on the US Google homepage: 2nd grader Sarah Gomez-Lane, who drew delightful dinosaurs to highlight her dream of becoming a paleontologist! We fell in love with Sarah’s rendering of her dinos, and were blown away by her big (you might even say “dino-sized”!) ambitions for her future, especially at her young age. For the first time in Doodle for Google’s 10-year history, Sarah got to collaborate with the Doodle team to transform her artwork into an animated, interactive experience. She also received $30,000 toward a college scholarship, and her elementary school in Falls Church, VA will receive $50,000 to spend on technology to help students like Sarah continue to pursue what inspires them. Behind the Doodle: Celebrating George Peabody

Today we celebrate George Peabody, a father of modern philanthropy and the namesake of the prestigious Peabody Award. Fun fact: Today's Doodle art is the result of a Doodle team volunteer mural project at George Peabody Elementary School in San Francisco, California! The mural currently resides in the student cafeteria. This is a behind-the-scenes look the entire painting process. More on George Peabody: Born into a lineage of businessmen in 1852, Peabody’s private education was cut short when the Civil War impoverished his family. He went to New York to apprentice at a general store and took his education into his own hands, spending countless hours at Y.M.C.A. Library, which he called his “alma mater.” Not long after, he secured his future when he became a partner in a successful investment firm, marking the beginning of a long and lucrative career. During his life, Peabody immersed himself in social and political activism, with special focus on the promotion of education in the South. In fact, it was on this day in 1867 that he was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal after donating $2,000,000 (roughly $36,000,000 today!) for the advancement of education, an act of generosity made all the more impressive by the fact that he left school at the age of 11.

Behind the Doodle: 30th anniversary of Pi Day!

Happy Pi Day! Celebrated each year on March 14th (3.14), Pi Day is dedicated to the mathematical constant, Pi. First recognized 30 years ago in 1988 by physicist Larry Shaw, Pi Day observers often celebrate with a slice of their favorite pie in honor of the number’s delicious sounding name. Today’s delectable Doodle - baked & built by award-winning pastry chef and inventor of the Cronut Dominique Ansel - pays homage to this well-rounded mathematical constant by representing the pi formula (circumference divided by diameter) using - what else - pie! Google Doodle celebrates the 44th Anniversary of the Birth of Hip Hop

On August 11, 1973, an 18-year-old, Jamaican-American DJ who went by the name of Kool Herc threw a back-to-school jam at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue in the Bronx, New York. During his set, he decided to do something different. Instead of playing the songs in full, he played only their instrumental sections, or “breaks” - sections where he noticed the crowd went wild. During these “breaks” his friend Coke La Rock hyped up the crowd with a microphone. And with that, Hip Hop was born. Today, we celebrate the 44th anniversary of that very moment with a first-of-its-kind Doodle featuring a custom logo graphic by famed graffiti artist Cey Adams, interactive turntables on which users can mix samples from legendary tracks, and a serving of Hip Hop history - with an emphasis on its founding pioneers. What’s more, the whole experience is narrated by Hip Hop icon Fab 5 Freddy, former host of “Yo! MTV Raps.” See more at g.co/doodle/hiphop

Google Doodle celebrates the 44th Anniversary of the Birth of Hip Hop

 Před 2 lety

Doodle 4 Google 2017!

Nine years in, the U.S. Doodle 4 Google Contest draws thousands of creative submissions from talented young artists across the country. Roughly 140,000 participants answered this year's prompt, "What I see for the future." Some imagined a future with modernized homes, others dreamed of a planet without endangered animals, while some saw a compassionate world built around communal harmony. Five incredibly talented national finalists spent the day at Google HQ in Mountain View, California. Of those five masterpieces, Connecticut 10th grader Sarah Harrison's Doodle, "A Peaceful Future" was chosen as the national winner! Sarah says, “My future is a world where we can all learn to love each other despite our religion, gender, race, ethnicity, or sexuality. I dream of a future where everyone is safe and accepted wherever they go, whoever they are.” Thank you to all those who submitted and to our finalists for sharing your creativity and imagination with us. Lotte Reiniger’s 117th Birthday Google Doodle

Lotte Reiniger created visually stunning and fantastical films using black cardboard, scissors, and boundless imagination. Pre-dating Walt Disney by nearly a decade, Reiniger pioneered a style of animation that relied on thousands of photos of paper cut-out silhouettes arranged to tell a story. It was a painstaking process that involved moving paper characters ever so slightly and snapping a photo of each movement. She created many films over the years, including The Adventures of Prince Achmed, the oldest surviving feature length animation. Nearly a century later, Reiniger continues to inspire animators and artists. On what would have been her 117th birthday, we celebrate Reiniger’s limitless creativity and pioneering spirit. Original Music: Silas Hite (www.silashite.com/), Max Steiner Agency (www.maxsteineragency.com/) See more Google Doodles at www.google.com/doodles

International Women's Day Doodle 2016: #OneDayIWill

Over the years, Doodles have marked the achievements of women in science, civil rights, journalism, sports, arts, technology and beyond. But for our 2016 International Women’s Day Doodle, we wanted to celebrate the next generation of Doodle-worthy women-the engineers, educators, leaders, movers and shakers of tomorrow. So we visited 13 cities around the world and asked 337 girls and women to complete the sentence “One Day I Will...” Then, we made this video. From San Francisco, Rio de Janeiro, Mexico City, Lagos, Moscow, Cairo, Berlin, London, Paris, Jakarta, Bangkok, New Delhi and Tokyo, the women we met make up a diverse mosaic of personalities, ages and backgrounds. And their aspirations are just as varied-ranging from the global to the very personal, from discovering more digits of pi to becoming a mother to giving a voice to those who can’t speak. We also asked some more familiar figures to participate, including anthropologist Jane Goodall-who wants to discuss the environment with the Pope-and Nobel Prize Winner Malala Yousafzai and activist Muzoon Almellehan, who are working fearlessly toward a future where every girl can go to school. Despite already impressive accomplishments under their belts, these women continue to dream big. Video creators: Lydia Nichols, Helene Leroux & Liat Ben-Rafael Original music: Merrill Garbus (tUnE-yArDs tuneyards.com)
